by Anne Akabori A short paragraph could never adequately pay tribute to my friend, George, who ultimately became not only a true friend, but my ally and spiritual soul mate. He personified the essence of a true gentleman illustrated by his kindness, concern for others and focus on the positive. In all the hours we talked, he never had a bad word to say about anyone. George became my "sidekick", buddy and supporter when he volunteered his time toward maintaining the existence of Visas for Life Foundation seven years ago. During those short years, I discovered and felt fortunate that my fate was to have him as a friend. I learned through his example, as a cancer survivor who lived 13 years beyond his prognosis, to appreciate and live each day to its fullest. George was young at heart. He even referred to his wife, Jane, as "Babe!" What more can be said than that? I also learned priceless lessons about what it is to be a better person, such as the meaning of unconditional love that I observed and was expressed by him to his children. I learned about a kind of courage to be one's self and at the same time respect everyone as individuals despite differences in opinion. Most of all, I will always treasure that you, George, were a true survivor. Because of that, I was given the gift of being a part of the last seven years of your life. Your life has been one that truly deserves to be celebrated and your beautiful children are true living tributes to your life.
The Visas for Life Foundation is happy to announce that George's son, Neil, will take over George's position as Treasurer. The Foundation humbly thanks everyone who made donations in memoriam of George. We truly appreciate your support. Contributors are listed on our Circle of Friends page.
